Abstract

The Tocantins State's economy has evolved from a subsistence economy and resource extraction to a more diversified economy over time, standing out in agriculture, services, and industry. This paper aims to analyze its historical path until its insertion into the global circuit, due to the economic growth that enabled its entry into the regional, national, and global economy. Changes that have occurred over the centuries and the public policies implemented have not yet managed to mitigate basic infrastructure problems. An exploratory methodological tool based on the literature was applied for this study. The main results suggest that the state went through the gold cycle in the south and southeast regions; later, the construction of Belém-Brasília Highway (BR-153) and the expansion of agribusiness from the 1990s onwards, enabled the commodities exportation and flow of goods, services, and people. Finally, the economic growth of agribusiness enabled the state to enter the global circuit, in addition showing potential in the carbon credit business.
