Ciencia y tecnología para el desarrollo argentino en el Atlántico Sur

Abstract

During July and August 2025, CONICET carried out a scientific mission exploring the Submarine Canyon in the Mar del Plata area aboard the research vessel R/V Falkor (too). This campaign continued the Continental I, II, and III expeditions, which emphasize the importance of understanding the South Atlantic regarded not only as a source of natural resources and biodiversity, but also as a strategic area for projecting power and as vital to national defense.

The text reflects on the need for a state-led science and technology policy capable of identifying and managing the resources essential for national development in the South Atlantic. Likewise, this endeavor should strengthen Argentina’s sovereignty claims over areas under British occupation—namely, the Malvinas (Falkland), South Sandwich, and South Georgia Islands, along with their corresponding maritime zones.
